Keep it simple! Start with something you’re going to be comfortable using in many occasions!
Usually, we recommend starting with a point&shoot because, as the name says, you just need to point and shoot! They’re lightweight, compact, good quality and great to flash some moments with your friends on night outs.
For those with a little bit more curiosity in controlling the photos, adjusting the shutter speed or the aperture: an SLR or a Range Finder.
